Ioan Davies is the most patient book designer I’ve had the pleasure to work with. We never met, but we laboured together for almost a year on a collection of letters that ran to nearly 400 pages.

After much email discussion, Ioan recommended the paper quality and the typeface. Both calls were good. The final product was way beyond my original hopes and those of our co-editor, the historian David Kynaston. Datelines and letterheads are a lay-out designer’s nightmare, but thanks to Ioan, we came out with an elegant, presentable book.

He took his own photograph for the cover, which was much better than my suggestion, and he consulted closely with the printer as the book went to press.

Crucially, he worked through a hundred corrections across more than a dozen proofs in PDF until we were down to the last line space and the redundant comma. It doesn’t get better than that.
